3 Decrease copied layer's opacity just enough for you to see the background layer.  To do this, simply go to Layers > Properties and lower down its opacity to around 80%.

 
4 Now, activate the Eraser Tool by pressing "X".

My Settings :

Start applying the eraser tool on the main object exposing the background layer.  Continue doing this until you attained the outcome you want.

Set current layer's opacity back to 100% (Layers > Properties).
